Massive tuition fee hikes are being proposed at the University of Manitoba! These fee increases are targeted at certain faculties, and are all in the double digits in terms of percentage - except for one which is over 100%.
Visit http://itsourfuture.ca to get more information and send a letter to Premier Selinger opposing these tuition increases.
These fee increases are not only in violation of the campaign promises of the Manitoba NDP, they are also in violation of the Levin commission report, which proposed a 5% cap (far exceeding the rate of inflation) on tuition increases.
Just wanted to wish you well in your struggle.
In 2005, Québec students successfully mobilized in their thousands to stop the Charest Liberal government from cutting $103 million from loans and bursaries. They fought in 2007 against the proposal to lift the tuition freeze, in place since 1996 (with Québec students paying under $1700 each - less than half the Canadian average). Now much bigger mobilization will be needed to stop the measures announced in the April budget.
Your victory is their victory. It is sad to see the obstacles that are placed in the way of Canada-wide coordination of such student struggles. I'm confident you young people will find a way to repair the damage done in the past and build unity which is more needed now that ever.
¡Hasta la victoria siempre!
