Really, you should have provided a bit more context in your initial post.

It sounds as if there is an extreme risk of forest fires there

I have friends that have been evacuated from their home for 5 weeks now due to a man made fire

$575 is nothing compared to the beating that driver would receive if they released his name.

And people who live in cities should not be too complacent about fires as look at Los Angeles right now

Yes, and this will only get worse with climate change. BC is getting weather typical of places far farther south on the Pacific coast.

Many house and apartment fires are still caused by poorly extinguished cigarettes.

(Not to mention the woman who caused a serious fire in an apartment building in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve when she cooked something past midnight, and not only left for another apartment, but left a one-year-old baby alone in the apartment where she was babysitting the child). Yes, another moron, but she had a record of drug abuse, and I suspect she may have been high, drunk or both.

Fortunately several police officers who were next door on another case managed to save the baby...

I heard the universe is made of protons, electrons, neutrons, and morons.

If I were to get a $575 ticket for smoking, I would whip out my solar-powered calculator and figure that would cost me 47.9 packs of cigarettes at $12 each. If I gave up 47.9 packs of cigarettes in order to pay the fine, I may have given them up permanently, eliminating the cost of the cigarettes in the first place, and the probability of getting the $575 fine in the second.

Evidently, cigarette butts are the #1 form of litter in most of North America.

It fascinates me how many people -- people who I'm sure would never just throw a pop can on the sidewalk -- seem to think you can just discard a butt whereever you want to and it's not littering.

The ban on smoking indoors seems to have aggravated the problem as a lot of people head out of pubs and other places, including when it is -40 (I chose that temp as it is where C and F coincide, and because it is bluidy cold) to grill a few cigs. I pass by an old-fashioned bar that was certainly a "taverne" (men only) dans l'temps and there is always a nest of butts outside. They also emerge at bus stops when there is a thaw.

By the way, I have found a video in English about the fire story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjQerIBlL64

The fire was "cooking-related", the woman had started cooking something and went to a neighbouring apartment, and the baby was actually only 12 months old.

For sure there are more people smoking outdoors.  Walk by a hospital in the middle of winter and watch smokers huddled outside in the cold in hospital gowns, having a smoke.

But it has nothing to do with where those smokers deposit their spent butts.  Flicking one "wherever" is a total choice.  If I finish a can of soda while walking, I can't reasonably just drop the empty can wherever I happen to be.

Our stores that sell ciogartettes should be mandated to have portable ashtrays for sale on prominent display. For the sake of a $5 purchase flicking a butt is disgusting.

It's a lot more serious than that BC butt-throwing smoker realizes, as wildfires in BC are seriously hindering even our meagre attempts in protecting our environment. Too many folks like him and our goose will be cooked if it isn't already.

To keep within a 2 degree planetary change in temperature, 80%, yes 80%, of all the proven reserves of oil, gas, and goal on the planet, must remain unused, in the ground.

With the BS that is coming from the climate change deniers, we are heading for huge climate changes, that is going to shake civilization to its very foundations.

They sort of do, in the form of pop cans and chip bags and candy bar wrappers and anything else that could extinguish a butt.  And unlike a $4 "portable ashtray", people do buy those.

Heck, it costs NOTHING to stomp a butt, pick it up extinguished, and deposit it in either the nearest butt receptacle, or (if you're sure it's extinguished) the garbage bin.

Typically when I see people flick their butt, they don't even seem to care whether it's still burning.  Just.... *flick*!

Venus Fly-Trap never covered that last group in his science lesson.
