Fredericton holds first pride parade

Fredericton's first gay pride parade went off smoothly Sunday, a stark contrast from the reluctant reception gay rights activists got when they initiated pride events 12 years ago.

Several hundred people - young and old; straight and gay - gathered along a riverfront walking trail to take part in a historic milestone for New Brunswick's capital city.

The city, and particularly Mayor Brad Woodside, once threw up roadblocks to Fredericton's gay community. The long-time mayor, currently in his seventh term, refused to read a gay pride week proclamation in the council chambers in 1995.
