Who will replace Jean as Canada's next Governor-General?

Is there any chance that Harper might try to extend Jean's term, as was done with Adrienne Clarkson?

As we've seen, Jean is willing to accede to Harper's demands. Furthermore, her replacement would be an anglophone, and odds are a male, neither of which are particularly likely to appeal to groups among which Harper needs to gain support.

NorthReport

Deborah Grey, the next Lieutenant Governor of Alberta I think.

The race is on, and the choices as of now are, well, diverse

Alanis Morissette. I want God as the GG.

David Young

If he goes for someone ex-military, but with Conservative ties, I predict retired General Lewis MacKenzie.

Is there a joke to why so many are spelling Gretzky's name wrong?

Hasn't he taken on American citizenship?  Sure seems like it.

When is Jean's term up?

There is no term as GG, but tradition says five years or so.

....for me his wife's gambling/racketiering charges definitely rule him out, as I have never ever believed he was NOT involved too.

Your memory is faulty, Janet Gretzky was never charged with anything, for a simple reason: betting on sports is perfectly legal in the USA. Rick Tocchet and the other guy were charged because it is illegal to profit from taking bets without a license. Ms Gretzky broke no laws. You can fear and loathe her if you like, but you'll need another reason.

My bet for GG is either Ann Medina or Wendy Mesley. Both are small, vital, female CBC reporters with no polticial background, just like the two predecessors. I would give the nominal edge to Median because hse is also a visible minority, but Mesley has the trump cards of youth, looks and much stronger current CBC affiliation.

I think it might be THIS guy:

Ken Burch Ken Burch's picture

Or THIS guy:

Bookish Agrarian

If it is a hockey player I predict Phil Esposito

He can then explain why it is wrong to boo members of the government who are really giving it their all, despite the outcome of their actions- after all the Russians would never boo their government  er...uh... never mind.

Or, perhaps this exemplar of Prairie genius:

Well.

If we insist on having one, isn't it about time we had someone from a 1st Nations background?

Why the hell would we want a GG from somebody associated with the CBC?  I don't think Navigator even wants that podium.

Ken Burch Ken Burch's picture

Actually, that'a a seriously brilliant idea.

Although Harper would probably choose that crazy right-wing FN guy that wants them to give up the subsidies and open casinos.

I do have my moments.

And seriously, can we stop with the CBC stuff?   Honestly.

Four of the past five GGs have worked for the CBC: Sauvé, Leblanc, Clarkson, Jean

Mary Simon would be another very good choice.  I forgot that John Baglow had advocated her appointment before.

demagogue

Deborah Grey has been living on Vancouver Island, (Qualicum Beach) in BC since she retired.  I doubt she will be giving up riding her chopper for a return to either Calgary or Ottawa.

I wouldn't doubt if Harper pulled a surpise out of his hat and nominated an Inuit.  Eva Aariak, the current Nunavut Premier could be an interesting choice, though the timing may be wrong as she is still in full term. Paul Okalik, the past premier could be considered.

An Inuit would the obvious choice.

Don't upset the anti-quebecers in Alberta and don't risk giving the opposition anything to criticize them for.  Plus, fit in with the Northern Strategy and Seal Meat Buffets that the Conservatives have been trumping as of late.

Unlike the Senators, Justices, or Bureaucrats, the Governor General is too visible for Harper to slop out a known friend. He'll want someone beyond criticism.

Well, then it's high time the job was rotated to someone who represents a respectable line of work.

Lol.  Posted the last one without reading Krago's post...  Mary Simon for sure.

Matthew Coon Come would be an irrepressible voice from Rideau Hall.

Sean in Ottawa

I think Harper is going to replace Jean with an answering machine. then he can phone up and cancel parliament-- say what he pleases and never be told no. Just like with the current GG only cheaper.

Hee-hee-hee.  I love Matthew Coon Come.  Stephen Harper will never appoint him.

I'm just going to quote you once, hope that is enough......

You never know, ol' Stevie had had more than one surprise - Gary Doer for example.

The best speech I have ever heard from a First Nations voice was from Coon Come, a blistering assessment of the extreme health crisis faced by First Nations, followed by a scathing review of the repeated failure and complicity of Indian and Northern Affairs and the Assembly of First Nations, which he headed up at the time.  He spared nobody, inclduing himself.

It was a sad day when that hack Fontaine and cronies ran him out.

Acxtually, Coon Come would be wasted as GG, he should be appointed Minister of DIAND and given a free hand within the budget to effect wholesale policy change.

johnpauljones

well it is an obvious choice for all to see. it has to be a non-quebecer who is bilingual and has never worked for the cbc.

only one option:

anne murray

aka Mycroft

Rachel Marsden is a bilingual non-Quebecer who has never worked for CBC.

Ugh. I feel like washing my brain out now.

Unionist

What about Kristen Lucas? She's apparently just coming off another gig.

ottawaobserver

Anne Murray did work for the CBC a long time ago.  Great: now you all know how old I am ...

frankvm

Adrienne Clarkson and Michaelle Jean have elevated the level of charisma/class to the role of GG; both here in Canada and internationally.  The last 2 'media' appointments have been impressive  ... in keeping with the same; my suggestions would be:

  • Beverly Thomson (CTV, Canada AM)
  • Heather Hiscox (CBC)
  • Wendy Mesley (CBC)

Just for the fun of it: Sheila Fraser.

What - an ex-NDP leader named Ed? Done that.

Whoever it is,we need to give the G.G. the power to say no to porridge too [I mean prorogue][how is it spelled?]

How about Donald Sutherland - He can bring his Orgonon Machine to Parliament one day and clean up the whole mess!! Maybe Kate Bush will come too? [who knows what I am talking about?]

"Enter Mary Simon, the current leader of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, who served as ambassador to Denmark, a university chancellor and constitutional negotiator for her people...The other early favourite for consideration is retired General John De Chastelain, a former Chief of Defence Staff, Ambassador to the US and chairman of the decommissioning effort in Ireland.."

Well, they could always go back to the pre-Vincent Massey tradition of appointing tired Limey hacks.  How about Boris Johnson?  He's Tory, and he'd be fun

NorthReport

I'm with Ross here, but nevertheless the next GG's appointment is going ahead, so perhaps the least Ross could do is roll some good doobies for the event.

Ross Rebagliati sends smoke signals on monarchy

Today, in an interview with The Globe, Mr. Rebagliati didn't back away from his comments. He said that it is "time for Canada to stand alone" and the monarchy "doesn't have to be part of our government any more."

"We love the Queen and she is a great representative of the people and basic human rights," Mr. Rebagliati said. "For the most part she stands for everything good. It boils down to Canadians wanting to be Canadians and not have another country dictate - I don't mean dictate - set the standard or path for Canada."

He added that Canada is a democracy and that he does not "see the word monarchy in democracy."

But North Report is not with Harper going ahead with this appointment on July 1st. I've have enough of the Brits wagging their finger at us, like we're some disobedient kid.

Northern GG for a northern power

Enter Mary Simon, the current leader of the Inuit as president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, who served as former ambassador to Denmark, a university chancellor and constitutional negotiator for her people.

Her invitation to join the VIP circle at a Winter Olympics reception last Friday along with Ms. Jean and Mr. Harper was interesting if not indicative of any future appointment.

An aide who raised the speculation with Ms. Simon personally confided she would be "gung ho" to tackle the job if asked and, while she is bilingual in English and her native Inuit tongue, would welcome the chance to dive into immersion to become fluent in French.

Ross for GG!

Lazer

I want Mila Mulroney for next GG. If not Mila, then maybe Hazel McCallian.

Star Spangled C...

What about Margaret MacMillan, the historian and writer? I believe her grandfather was a former British PM so she has strong ties to britain, she's a highly respected academic, great writer. I know she was part of the panel that wrote the Citizenship Ministry's "Guide to Canada" or whatever it was called so must have at least some connection to the government. Not sure if she speaks French but if she does, she'd be a good pick.

George Victor

The next GG will have to be closer to "the people" than Margaret MacMillan. Steve must be canvassing the Alberta hills as we ponder.

Ian Tyson?  Unless he's too old/too iconoclastic...
