Bernie Sanders will be sworn in as our nation's 45th president. I explain why Sanders wins the Democratic nomination and presidency in my recent appearance on The Thom Hartmann Program. If you've disagreed with my thought process in the past, just watch the segment and you'll understand why Bernie Sanders is the true Democratic front-runner. American politicians don't set records with 2.3 million contributions (breaking Obama's record), draw crowds of over 100,000 people several months after announcing, and raise more money than every GOP candidate without massive political momentum. Furthermore, nobody in American politics goes from 5.3% support in the Democratic Primary race on March 9, 2015 to over 30% support in December, without media attention (Sanders gets 1/23th the television coverage of Trump) and with pundits giving the candidate little chance of success. The underlying data (money raised, attendance at events, social media popularity) undermines the polling data showing Clinton leading by a wide margin. Remember, Clinton was up by a similar margin over Obama in 2007.

That's where Sanders may fall down is in playing too nice with Clinton. If Bernie can't expose Clinton's lying and blatant opportunism during the primaries, the Republicans will do so in the general election.

Muslim Woman Ejected From Donald Trump Rally

"US police escorted a Muslim woman wearing a hijab from Donald Trump's campaign event, after she stood up in silent protest during the Republican presidential front-runner's speech.

Rose Hamid, 56, who was sitting in the stands behind Trump in the rally held in Rock Hill, South Carolina, stood up when the billionaire businessman suggested that Syrian refugees were affiliated with the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

Trump commented on Hamid as she was being kicked out of the event. 'There is hatred against us that is unbelievable. It's their hatred, it's not our hatred.'

[url=http://commondreams.org/news/2016/01/10/sanders-and-clinton-neck-and-nec... competitive with Clinton in key states:[/url]

Quote:
Just weeks ahead of the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are neck-and-neck, polls released Sunday reveal.

In New Hampshire, Sanders is backed by 50 percent—a four point lead over Clinton, who has 46 percent, according to surveys from NBC/The Wall Street Journal/Marist.

In Iowa, Clinton has 48 percent, compared to 45 percent for Sanders.

In both states, the gap between Sanders and Clinton fell within the poll's margin of error. Conducted between January 2 and 7 among 422 likely Democratic caucus-goers, the Iowa survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percent. The New Hampshire survey of 425 probable Democratic primary voters had the same margin of error.

"Turning to the general election," the poll summary notes, "when Clinton and Sanders are each matched against, Trump, Cruz, or Rubio, Sanders does better than Clinton among registered voters in both Iowa and New Hampshire."

The Great Forgetting  -  by Chris Hedges

http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/the_great_forgetting_20160110

"Presidential candidate Donald Trump may be brash, narcissistic, stupid, racist and elitest, but he does not have Hillary Clinton's carefully honed and chilly amoral artifice. It was she, and an ethically bankrupt liberal establishment, that created the fertile groupd for Trump by fleecing the citizens on behalf of corporations and imposing the neoliberal project.

Trump and Clinton, along with fellow candidate Bernie Sanders, refuse to admit what they know: Our most basic civil and political rights have been taken from us. The corporate oligarchy will remain entrenched in power no matter who wins the presidency, and elections are a carnival act..."

His former professor was quite revealing about how big of a of sleazeball Cruz actually is.

Under Ted Cruz’s own logic, he’s ineligible for the White House

When Cruz was my constitutional law student at Harvard, he aced the course after making a big point of opposing my views in class — arguing stridently for sticking with the “original meaning” against the idea of a more elastic “living Constitution” whenever such ideas came up. I enjoyed jousting with him, but Ted never convinced me — nor did I convince him.

At least he was consistent in those days. Now, he seems to be a fair weather originalist, abandoning that method’s narrow constraints when it suits his ambition.

By the time another president takes office, three of the Supreme Court’s sitting members will have passed the age of 80 and one will be nearly 84. Cruz’s public pronouncements about the kinds of justices he would appoint suggest that his litmus test would filter out any jurist who views the Constitution as flexible enough to reflect accumulated experience and changed perspectives. Unless, it seems, that kind of jurist would rule in a way Cruz favors on one or another issue crucial to him — like his eligibility to serve as president. Because a rigid “originalism” tends not to favor women’s rights or gay rights, I wouldn’t count on a Cruz appointee to be open-minded on such matters.

It's beginning to look more like bye, bye Ted. Two strikes and you are out. First, being a Canadian citizen, and now this.

Ted Cruz Didn’t Disclose Loan From Goldman Sachs for His First Senate Campaign

As Ted Cruz tells it, the story of how he financed his upstart campaign for the United States Senate four years ago is an endearing example of loyalty and shared sacrifice between a married couple.

“Sweetheart, I’d like us to liquidate our entire net worth, liquid net worth, and put it into the campaign,” he says he told his wife, Heidi, who readily agreed.

But the couple’s decision to pump more than $1 million into Mr. Cruz’s successful Tea Party-darling Senate bid in Texas was made easier by a large loan from Goldman Sachs, where Mrs. Cruz works. That loan was not disclosed in campaign finance reports.

Those reports show that in the critical weeks before the May 2012 Republican primary, Mr. Cruz — currently a leading contender for his party’s presidential nomination — put “personal funds” totaling $960,000 into his Senate campaign. Two months later, shortly before a scheduled runoff election, he added more, bringing the total to $1.2 million — “which is all we had saved,” as Mr. Cruz described it in an interview with The New York Times several years ago.

I certainly don't "like" Donald Trump.  But insofar as he seems to have dominated the Republican side of things, I really do appreciate that he's not playing with a deck of 52 "Jesus" cards.

Is he obnoxious?  A blowhard?  A bully?  A priveleged white guy?  Sure.  But you'd get all that and more with some Mike Huckabee type.  Maybe lack of Jesus stuff will end up being his Achilles' Heel.  Maybe you can't get the Republican nod if you don't start with a pious prayer.  But it's nice to see a mostly secular asshole for once.

Not sure it is gonna happen but if Sanders wins NH & Iowa does he have room to grow? Maybe his being an Independent until joining the Democrats in '15 might be a bonus as many voters are not big fans of party politics. Any possibility Obama would endorse Sanders?

Well, it's surely no feel-good moment.  But if they were barred from participation on the basis of "being clowns" (even as it's clear that they resonate well with some voters) then that might be more of a concern.

To me it's a bit like seeing photos of some guy's wedding to an Anime body pillow.  On the one hand, is this what we've been fighting for for all these years?  The right of someone to "marry" their "waifu" from some cartoon they like?  On the other hand, what better evidence of freedom could we need?  When it comes to setting boundaries for freedom, the wackier the better. :)

Trump is quite effective and I hope for the Democrat's sake he is not the GOP candidate.

In the debate tonite Cruz took some shots at Trump, but Trump however waited until right moment and then squished Cruz like a bug over his derogatory New York, New York comments. Trump described the rebuilding effort by New Yorkers after the World Trade Centre came down and told Cruz his comments were very insulting. It was the perfect response.
