Just because he is one doesn't mean his opponent would not also have been one.  When people wrap themselves in the progressive mantle I feel that people on the left need to point out their hypocrisy.  The Republicans are nasty war mongers but at least they don't pretend to be people of peace.

Thanks Unionist, I've been just fine. I hope you're well too. Actually I have been on and off here occasionally the past few months.  :)

Gitmo Hunger Strike: 'Prisoners Put Their Lives On The Line In A Medieval Torture Chamber'

"The prisoners' lawyers, along with other experts and former detainees, are sounding the alarm over the inmates' critical condition. 'They are indeed threatening their own lives, putting their lives on the line in this heroic effort to express a sense of autonomy, outrage at being imprisoned at what can be characterized as nothing less than an American sort-of medieval torture chamber,' anthropologist Mark Mason, who studies the cultural factors behind human suffering told RT."

I wonder what the cultural factors are behind Canadians wilful indifference to such imperial barbarism?

[url= Strike Cases Surge at Guantanamo[/url]

A hunger strike by detainees who have been held for years without trial at the military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, has grown to involve at least 25 prisoners, the Defense Department disclosed Wednesday.

That number includes eight who are being force-fed a nutritional supplement through a hose snaked into their nose while they are restrained in a chair.

There have long been about half a dozen prisoners at Guantánamo who refuse to eat and have been kept alive by force-feeding. But the number refusing meals among the population of 166 inmates has recently surged.

Never forget that the head of these fascist torturers is the liar Obama. He's visiting his best friend Netanyahu, no doubt to work out lists of more detainees.

Jeez, are they still there at Gitmo? By gum I'll bet the inquisition has given them mind transplants aboard a UFO years ago. They're prolly ready to confess to the Nazi bombing of Pearl Harbor by now. tsk tsk

Torture has never had anything to do with seeking truth. Not during Pope Gregory's time and most certainly not today.

The fruits of torture were always to serve a purpose for persecuting "heretics"/opposition to oppressive and corrupt regimes then,  and the same is true today with a lot of 9/11 propaganda insulating a military dictatorship from the truth.

What a load of horseshit twas.

On top of all else it is an occupation of another country's territory no more defensible than any other.

Obama: killing hope and people the old school way.

It;s closed down already ( that is,  the State Department office for closing it down).

150 million to refurbish it for present and future political prisoners.

Obama promised to close Guantánamo. Instead, he's made it worse

Facing deteriorating conditions and the hopelessness of their legal abyss, detainees are starving themselves in protest

by  Murtaza Hussain

The 44-year-old British resident and father of four [Shaker Aamer] has spent over 11 years incarcerated at Guantánamo despite being cleared for release as early as 2007. To this day never charged with a crime, Aamer is just one of hundreds of detainees who remain imprisoned in Guantánamo. Despite running on an explicit campaign promise to shut down the island prison which has become a symbol of the abuses of the "war on terror", President Obama has continued to preside over its operation.

And by recent accounts, under his tenure, the conditions for prisoners there – from both a physical and legal standpoint – have become markedly worse....

Instead of Closing, Gitmo to Receive Major Upgrades
Pentagon Set for Major Modernization Project for Prison
by Jason Ditz, March 21, 2013

Pentagon officials say that a plan being pushed would spend $150 million upgrading the facility, creating a new hospital which is going to be helpful, since so many of the detainees are already in failing health and are seemingly going to stay there until they die of old age.

Though the White House insists they remain “committed” to closing Gitmo they’ve made no effort to actually do so in years, and have even closed the State Department office that was supposed to find places to send the detainees....

Torture is wrong. Being human I struggle with the dilema: what if tourturing someone will save someone elses life? What if it saves 1000 lives, a million?

keeping these human beings in a state of limbo is wrong regardless in my opinion. We don't treat the worst of the worst criminal like this in North America do we?

Hell no. They have lawyers and rights up their butts. These people? Nope, the US thinks they found a loophole but it's ethically and morally wrong.

Any information they even COULD have had is 11 years old and worthless.

Gitmo bay is an enemy of human kind.

The Intolerable Conditions Inside Obama's Guantanamo

The detainees who are refusing food have been stripped of all possessions, including a sleeping mat and soap, and are made to sleep on concrete floors in freezing solitary cells. “It is possible that I may die in here,” said Shaker Aamer through his lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith. “I hope not, but if I do die, please tell my children that I loved them above all else, but that I had to stand up for the principle that they cannot just keep holding people without a trial, especially when they have been cleared for release.” Aamer, a British father of four, was approved for release more than five years ago.

Forced feeding is recognized even by mainstream institutions as a form of torture.  It's clear to me at least that allies, friends, and collaborators of states that torture people continues to define the political apparatus of this country, more than anything else.  All of our main parties have implicated themselves with torture.  It should be recalled the next time political canvassers knock on people's doors, in whatever manner of expression that suits the occasion.

I concur - and suggest perhaps also to stop inviting  US Torture party politicos to ndp conventions here too.

That's weird. It's illegal to assist someone in commiting suicide. It's illegal (more or less?) to commit suicide. It's illegal to try and convince someone to commit suicide.

From that I would conclude that allowing somone commit suicide through starvation is illegal and forceing them to eat is no different than commiting someone who attempts suicide to a hospital against their will, like locking them up.

It's hard for me to understand how force feeding someone would be torture.

Even animals in shelters are treated more humainly than this, how shameful.

The Guantanamo 'show trial' won't start until at least the fall of 2014 but pre-trial hearings are now underway.

The bad news for the accused:

they will be executed if shown to be guilty.

The 'good' news; if they are acquitted, they will continue to be held as enemy combatants indefinitely.

Inside the U.S. Torture Chambers: Prisoner’s Guantánamo Diary Details 12 Years of Abuse, Terror

video or transcript

After a seven-year legal battle, the diary of a prisoner held at Guantánamo Bay has just been published and has become a surprise best-seller. Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s diary details his experience with rendition, torture and being imprisoned without charge. Slahi has been held at the prison for more than 12 years. He was ordered released in 2010 but is still being held. "The cell — better, the box — was cooled down so that I was shaking most of the time," he writes. "I was forbidden from seeing the light of the day. Every once in a while they gave me a rec time in the night to keep me from seeing or interacting with any detainees. I was living literally in terror. I don’t remember having slept one night quietly; for the next 70 days to come I wouldn’t know the sweetness of sleeping. Interrogation for 24 hours, three and sometimes four shifts a day. I rarely got a day off." We air a clip of a Guardian video about Slahi’s case, which features actors Colin Firth and Dominic West reading from his diary. We speak with three guests: Slahi’s lawyer, Nancy Hollander; book editor, Larry Siems; and Col. Morris Davis, the former chief military prosecutor at Guantánamo Bay, who says Slahi is "no more a terrorist than Forrest Gump."
