Cannonfire: The Ukraine Coup - and Beyond

Oh.... so a parliament voting to remove its president is a coup now?

I know another country's head of government who considers parliamentary attempts to challenge his office to be overturning the will of the people. That doesn't make it so.

It might be worth noting that vote included members of Yanukovich's own party breaking ranks and voting to remove him.

Sleepwalking Again  -  by Paul Craig Roberts

http://dissidentvoice.org/2014/02/sleepwalking-again/

"...The problem with Washington's plot to overthrow the elected government of Ukraine and install its minions is twofold: The chosen US puppets have lost control of the protests to armed radical elements with historical links to nazism, and Russia regards an EU/NATO takeover of Ukraine as a strategic threat to Russian independence.

Washington overlooked that the financially viable part of today's Ukraine consists of historical Russian provinces in the east and south that the Soviet leaders merged into Ukraine in order to dilute the fascist elements in Western Ukraine that fought for Adolf Hitler against the Soviet Union.

It is these ultra-nationalist elements with Nazi roots, not Washington's chosen puppets who are now in charge of the armed rebellion in Western Ukraine.

If the democratically elected Ukraine government is overthrown, the eastern and southern parts would rejoin Russia. The western part would be looted by Western bankers and corporations, and the NATO Ukraine bases would be targeted by Russian Iskander missiles.

It would be a defeat for Washington and their gullible Ukrainian dupes to see half of the country return to Russia. To save face, Washington might provoke a great power confrontation, which could be the end of us all..."

cco

Smith, as I understand it, parliament's ability to remove him at all was restored by the deal to return to the 2004 constitution, a deal which included a unity government and an end to occupations of public buildings. Then parliament immediately turned around and impeached him. So it may be legal from a procedural standpoint, but it's not exactly comparable to the Canadian situation where long-established constitutional convention was being followed.

Quote:

The former boxing champion and parliamentarian Vitali Klitschko urged the thousands of demonstrators in Independence Square to remain where they are in order to guarantee that the advances won by the opposition are protected by the people. Klitschko also said that the “self defense” militias organized to defend the barricades at the square against riot police should remain on the streets to provide security.

That'd be these guys. I'm sleeping better already.

'I'll Be Fighting Jews and Russians Till I Die': Ukrainian  Right-Wing Militants Aiming For Power

http://rt.com/news/ukraine-right-sector-militants-210/

'Aleksandr Muzychko is a notorious nationalist leader. Back in 2007 he pledged to fight against 'Communists, Jews and Russians for as long as blood flows in his veins,' openly saying that leading the fight against all of the above-mentioned groups is his 'credo'.

Back in 1994 Muzychko, aka Sashko Bilyi, arrived in Chechnya to join separatist forces. He took part in numerous battles with federal troops, mainly in the capital Grozny, and personally knocked out three tanks, six armored personnel carriers and an SP vehicle.

According to media reports, he led an entire federal forces unit (presumably the marines) into an ambush. As a result it was destroyed by the Chechan separatists. Muzychko later served a term in a Ukrainian prison for racketeering and gangsterism, but he claims it was only for political reasons.

'The next president of the country will be from Right Sektor! Our party will also be represented in Parliament,' he once promised."

6079_Smith_W

So what you're saying cco is that you don't believe in the supremacy of parliament. I think the fact that members of Yanukovich's own party helped oust him says more.

Not to mention the fact that he had snipers shooting at his own people.

And again, cco, you might want to look at who is actually supporting what, and how much power each group has. Posting a picture of Svoboda supporters? What does that mean?

cco

Parliamentary supremacy is a feature of some governments (Israel, New Zealand, and the UK come to mind -- though not Canada, since 1982). Ukraine has gone back and forth between parliamentary and semi-presidential systems three times in the past ten years as part of the ongoing east/west power struggle. So no, I don't "believe" in Ukrainian parliamentary supremacy any more than I "believe" in Yanukovych's ability to rule by decree (or the Canadian constitution, for that matter). It's the law now, yes, just as Yanukovych's anti-protest law was briefly the law. Hence my comments about "procedurally legal". It's kind of like the Italian electoral system, which Berlusconi changed on his own purely to strengthen his party's position (Canadian provinces have done that before too, usually to keep out the CCF/NDP).

Incidentally, in 2010 the Ukrainian Constitutional Court ruled the 2004 amendments that have just been restored unconstitutional. Do you "believe" in judicial oversight?

I do, actually. No need for scare quotes. "Believe" in this context means support, after all.

But to get back to my actual point, the action taken was in no way a coup. It was parliamentary vote. And given what has been happening in that country, it seems a better way to break that impasse than what Russia was suggesting.

cco

The last time something like this happened in the region, incidentally, was when amid massive anti-privatization protests the elected Russian parliament voted to remove Boris Yeltsin for tanking the country's economy and unconstitutionally declaring unilateral amendments that increased his own powers. Yeltsin responded by shelling parliament with tanks, banning leftist parties and newspapers, and arresting parliamentarians with the backing of the armed forces. America called that a great day for democracy, too.

6079_Smith_W

What does the Russian crisis have to do with how issues in Ukraine are playing out? Somehow don't think looking at what the Americans are doing and doing the opposite is all that solid a means of forming your political viewpoint.

Their welfare, and that of the Europeans and Russians aren't the central issue here, even though it might seem so to those who just see Ukraine as a pawn in someone else's game.

Geez, Smith, can't you show just a tad less excitement over who's "winning" in Ukraine? It's not Sochi, y'know.

My personal opinion is that it's none of our affair (no more than Russia's or the U.S. or the EU) what happens there. Even if they want to kill each other off in modest numbers. Leave them alone. They've seen a lot of killing in the past (I've got a long list of family members, if you'd like), and they'll get over it.

6079_Smith_W wrote:

Yeah, right. The Taliban, Saddam, al-Assad, Qaddafi, the Sudanese government - they were all "killing their own civilians". That's become the new-found pretext for imperialist aggression, occupation, murder. It used to be that they were "Marxists", but that's not fashionable any more.

It's so comforting when you can identify the villains so easily, just by reading a few lying MSM news reports, bought and paid for by the "WEST". Or the "EAST". Whoever. Personally, I'm not as smart as all that. But I just checked my birth certificate, and sure enough, I wasn't born yesterday.

Whoops, I missed your post, josh.

Josh, really. What's your problem? Don't you understand that those thousands protesting in Sevastopol are the bad guys??? And the protestors in Kyiv are the good guys???

Sheesh.

6079_Smith_W

Heh?

How do you figure I'm picking sides?

I'm not the one making accusations of a coup, Unionist, nor painting a wide range of opposition groups as Nazis. If anything, I've been trying to question some pretty heavy rhetoric that has been dominating this thread.

And the only reason I mention the snipers is that it might be a possible reason (though not nearly as compelling as a covert Imperialist plot, obviously) why parliamentarians might have voted as they did.

Nor, for that matter, am I casting this based on whether it's better for the U.S. or Russia. And unlike some here I haven't claimed any understanding of motive.

I have respect for your family history. But using it as a foil to say it's okay for them to kill each other off "in modest numbers". Not so much respect.

I don't know how many Ukrainians there are in Montreal, but there are a fair number here, many first and second generation, and I assure you there are plenty of people here who feel very connected and concerned with what is happening there. I have spoken with people who have come here from there who are both pro-and anti-Russian.

And no, I am no expert, but I was there at a time when things were not all that good between Ukraine and Russia, and I got to see what happened when Russia turned the oil off.

So if I'm pushing back a bit against the prevailing spin here, well maybe I have seen (no, not just here in this thread) pictures of people concerned about their families and homeland ridiculed as a bunch of Nazis one too many times.

US and EU Are Erecting a Nazi Regime on Ukrainian Territory

http://tarpley.net/usa-and-eu-are-erecting-a-nazi-regime-on-ukrainian-te...

"Statement of Natalia Vitrenko of The Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine:

On February 22, militants and terrorists of the Euromaidan Parliament [ie the Kiev fascist mob] executed a neo-Nazi coup using armed force.

Violating all norms of the Constitution, international law, and trampling European values, Parliament exceeded its authority and committed criminal acts. Washington and Brussels - who told the world and all mankind that Euromaidan is a nonviolent action of the Ukrainian people to make a European choice and protect democracy and European values - should now honestly admit that the Ukrainian people got nothing.

They used a Nazi coup, carried out by the insurgents, terrorists and politicians of Euromaidan to serve the geopolitical interests of the West.

Across the country, ghoulish lynchings continue. People are being beaten and stoned, while undesirable members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine are subject to mass intimidation and local officials see their families and children targeted by death threats if they do not support the installation of this new political power.

The new Ukrainian authorities are massively burning the offices of political parties they do not like and have publicly announced the threat of criminal prosecutions and prohibition of political parties and public organizations that do not share the ideology and goals of the new regime...

On behalf of the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine we declare that we do not recognize the legitimacy of this coup, and do not recognize as legitimate the actions of the new Ukrainian authorities. We condemn the total violation of the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Ukraine on national, ethnic and cultural, religious and political grounds.

We appeal to the European Parliament and the UN Security Council, calling for their immediate intervention into what is happening in Ukraine, to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens, to prevent the unleashing by the new Ukrainian government of World War III on the European continent.

RE NDPP's lengthy citation of Natalia Vitrenko, Chairman of the Progressive Socialist Party above:

For a little context: http://readtiger.com/wkp/en/Progressive_Socialist_Party_of_Ukraine

The Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine is a left-wing party that supports the Eurasian Union as an alternative to the EU. PSPU traditionally campaigns on an anti-NATO, anti-IMF and pro-Russian platform. During the 1998 parliamentary elections the party won 4,04%[4] of the vote... the party's parliamentary faction was dissolved in February 2000.... at the legislative elections, 30 March 2002, the party established the Nataliya Vitrenko Bloc alliance ... it won 3.22%.... In the March 2006 parliamentary elections, the party again failed to gain any seats in Parliament... winning 2,93%. At the 2007 parliamentary elections the party failed once more to enter the parliament, its result dropped to 1,32%... In the run-up to the 2010 presidential election the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine refused to join the election bloc of left and central left political forces ... Eventually the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine supported Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych in the runoff of the 2010 presidential election. During the 2010 Ukrainian local elections, the party only managed to win three representatives in the Sevastopol municipality. The party did not participate in the 2012 parliamentary elections.

Yawn.

Justin Trudeau’s hockey-Ukraine joke on comedy program draws serious Conservative backlash

At the end of a big Olympic hockey weekend, in which the Canadian men’s team took home gold following a win over Sweden, Trudeau was asked about the situation in Ukraine and the prospect of Russian involvement.

Trudeau, consistently ahead of the Tories and the NDP in public opinion polls, joked that Russia could be fuming after being eliminated late last week from the medal round in Winter Games hockey.

“It’s very worrisome,” Trudeau said after telling the panel that he now considers Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to be illegitimate.

“Especially since Russia lost in hockey, they will be in a bad mood. We are afraid of a Russian intervention in Ukraine.”
Yanukovych is in hiding, his regime in tatters, following months of pro-Western protests in Ukraine.

Liberal MP Marc Garneau chided the Conservatives for their attack on Trudeau, noting how Liberal delegates at the party’s policy convention in Montreal had just a few hours earlier passed an emergency resolution calling on the support of a transition to democracy in Ukraine.
