Carleton fails its students AGAIN!
When students demanded that a sexual assault centre be built on the campus of Carleton University, we were given a host of reasons. From 1. we already have a list of ‘adequate’ resources on campus so there is no need for a centre to be built- that instead, we should be focusing on better co-ordinating these services. 2. we were told that the university did not have enough money to build a centre on campus and 3. that it would bring bad press to Carleton alluding to the fact that sexual assault occurs on campus!!!???? (I know, my reaction was also like WTF! Are they serious!!!??)
Then to add insult to injury, during our rally last Monday, President Runte kept saying that she was willing to speak with us students to figure out what would be the next steps. Runte! We HAVE BEEN TELLING YOU! Over and over again! What we want is a sexual assault centre to be built on campus!
YET! Despite our constant cries, pleas and demands (which were also proven through the democratic process of a referendum both at the undergraduate and graduate levels) you and the administration go ahead and lauch the implementation of an ‘Emergency Notification System’ that would cost $350,000 an estimate that may or may not include maintenance costs!!!!!
WHERE THE HELL DID THIS MONEY COME FROM? WHY THE HELL ARE YOU NOT LISTENING TO THE DEMANDS OF THE VERY STUDENTS YOU ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO?!! THE VERY STUDENTS WHOSE NEEDS AND CONCERNS YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE REPRESENTING!!????
And what makes it worse is the structure of this program; a structure that requires students to divulge quite confidential information such as cell numbers….hmmm sounds like another form of governance and control especially considering Carleton’s reputation of using totalitarian and invasive scare tactics to strengthen its control and rein over students.
Our sexual assault centre will cost about $60,000 to get off the ground and running. ALL we are asking for is our much demanded, way overdue SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTRE. Not the implementation of a ‘terror detect’ system that will only instill a culture of fear on our campus, drench already limited financial resources and fail to target the root causes of violence against women!
