Quote:

Place des Arts, which opened 50 years ago on Sept. 21, 1963, was former mayor Jean Drapeau’s first big catapult for hurling Montreal into the future. And he had more thrusts on the way. Just a month earlier, the groundbreaking had begun for Expo 67, whose structures — like Habitat and the geodesic dome — would reveal breathtaking, innovative design and technology. Also rumbling down Drapeau’s pike were new metropolitan highways and the métro. More distant was the biggest, costliest launch of all: the Olympic Games.

Heralding the grandiose achievements that would draw world attention to Montreal during the 1960s and ’70s was Place des Arts. Like Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, Drapeau knew that if he built it, they would come.
