Quebec Political History
voice of the damned

I was gonna take up Swallow's suggestion and start a thread on Duplessis, the Padlock Laws, JWs etc, but I see this one has already been called into existence.

For context, here is the thread drift from the QS thread...

Since someone on the other thread had expressed interest in reading more on Duplessis and the JWs, I believe this book is considered the academic standard...

Might be kinda hard to find in the analog world. Penton was a devout JW when he wrote that book, but later left the organization and wrote books criticizing their internal policies.

150.00$ - 2 cents!  It isn't THAT interesting.

The first link was good though. One thing that struck me is that the actual interests of the people were never the priority of any of the political parties.

Yeah, I never buy on-line, so I'm sometimes shocked when I'm reminded much you have to pay for old books and whatnot.

Duplessis and the Union Nationale were the precursor to the Quiet Revolution which was a fascinating time politically in Quebec.

Révolution tranquille continuee

Interestingly enough Jean Lesage lost to Daniel Johnson Sr in 1966 who was only in office for 2 years. Each of his two sons however became premier ministre but for different parties, Pierre-Marc Johnson in 1985 for Parti Quebecois, and Daniel Johnson Jr in 1994 for the Liberals. Johnson Sr co-authored a book entitled Egalite ou Independance. His wife Reine Gagne, in 1953, survived being shot twice by her lover, Radio-Canada announcer Bertrand Dussault, who then committed suicide. He was nicknamed 'Danny boy'. Johnson died the nite before what was supposed to be the dedication ceremony in his name at the Manic-5 Dam on the Manicouagan River.

Here is a list of the Quebec premier ministres showing their political affiliation and when they were in office
