Members from the Quebec Association of Victims of Priests use sign language on the steps of Église St. Viateur d’Outremont during a protest on Sunday March 10, 2013.

Quote:

On a chilly winter day in 2010, France Bédard led a picket demanding Cardinal Marc Ouellet’s resignation for not seriously addressing victims’ claims of abuse by Quebec clerics.

Today, she’d like to see him elected pope.

As founder of the Quebec Association of Victims of Priests, Bédard is to announce on Sunday the group’s support for Cardinal Ouellet becoming pontiff, during a protest against abuses by the Catholic Church held outside the Clercs de Saint-Viateur Outremont.

[...]

Over the years, Bédard said she sent repeated letters to Ouellet asking the Cardinal to act and remove priests proved to have committed acts of pedophilia and other kinds of sexual abuse.

“I have written to you on several occasions, without ever receiving a response,” Bédard wrote in 2008. “Your silence in this situation is inexplicable.”

With the Church losing influence in modern day Quebec, having a Quebec-born pontiff is the best hope for the alleged victims that Bédard’s association represents to obtain financial compensation from the Church.

“We realize now that is the only way these three cases will be swiftly addressed by Church authorities,” Tarini said. “What the victims need is not prayer but compensation.”

Quote:

Several dozen people who say they were sexually abused by members of Quebec’s Catholic church gathered today on the steps of St-Viateur church.

They were protesting against what they see as a lack of action in addressing sexual abuse in the church.

Some protesters wore white paper hats mimicking bishops' mitres that read “Vote for Monseigneur Ouellet.” [...]

Carlo Tarini, a spokesman for the Quebec Association of Victims of Priests, was at the Outremont church.

If Ouellet is elected Pope, he said, “1.2 billion Catholics across the world will know what has gone on in Quebec.”

Ouellet, of course, has been too busy to ever acknowledge his Organization's crimes against innocent victims.

Where are the pitchforks?

Isn't that what they mean: bring him to Rome, 'supported' by a bunch of pitchforks?

KenS

Besides, he's already in Rome.

Its not like they have to 'support' him all the way over there.

Just have to hoist him up.

I made up the slogan - kind of an amateurish riff on "support the troops, bring 'em home" - but you probably already figured that out.

The good part is that so far, this scumbag has no support in Québec - except for this kind, with ulterior motives.

ETA: Listen, I knew it was weak. If anyone has better slogans, please include them here! Marc my words, he'll be Pope yet!!

I don't understand why the victims groups believe that having Ouellet as pope will advance their claims for compensation. Won't they just be ignored - again?

I understand them using this to advance their cause, but he would actually sidestep the issue even more as the Pope.

Also understand why they need redress for THEIR abuse before they die, but this is alas a universal problem, not one limited to Québec or any other heavily-Catholic place.

I REALLY don't want to see Ouellet as pope.

KenS

My guess is that they figure they in particular cannot lose with him as Pope. I bet they know he would be intent to ignore them.

But the world is less likely to ignore them if he is Pope.

But its still strange.

Do they have something against pitchforks?

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Yeah, my sentiments exactly. Ouellet as Pope will be painful to a lot of abuse survivors, and other people in general.

KenS

Sweet Jesus spare us from adulation mania we get assaulted with if there is a Canadian Pope.

Exactly, Ken. Jason Kenney says it will be ground-breaking.

lagatta

I think of Kenny more as air-breaking.

I don't want to see anyone as pope. But I'm curious as to why you say this, lagatta. Are you suggesting that someone else in that position might do less harm? My sources tell me that there is no John XXIII in the wings (and even if there were, poisons are even more sophisticated today than they were then...). My real concern would be if they bit the racist bullet and actually elected a cardinal from Africa or Latin America or Asia. They'd use that image to give themselves a lease on life.

Now repeat after me:

Send Marc home! Park Marc in Rome!

Slumberjack

I think we should manage our own toxic waste here at home instead of shipping off for others to deal with.

Amen, SJ. Not just with this subject, but as with so much else.
